Thanjavur, September 26, 2024: In a historic milestone, Meenakshi Hospital Thanjavur, in collaboration with Gleneagles Global Health City, has successfully performed the delta region’s first liver transplant recently. The procedure gave a new lease on life to a 40-year-old male from Uttar Pradesh, who received a liver harvested from a brain-dead road traffic accident victim at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.
Meenakshi Hospital Thanjavur, a leading multi-specialty hospital has an ongoing partnership with Gleneagles Hospital, one of India’s renowned multi-organ transplant centers, located in Chennai, under which Gelneagles experts in liver procedures regularly visit Thanjavur and provide consultations and treatments to patients at Meenakshi Hospital.
The 8-hour long procedure was performed by a competent team of surgeons from multiple departments of both the hospitals. The team from Meenakshi Hospital comprised Dr. Prasanna, Surgical Gastroenterologist, and Dr.G.Arimanikkam, Anesthesiologist. While, Dr. Joy Varghese, Director – Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology, led Gleneagles team that included Dr.Rajanikanth Patcha, Clinical Lead and Senior Consultant, Institute of Liver Sciences, and Dr Selvakumar Malleeswaran, HOD Anaesthesia.
The patient had been undergoing liver treatment at Meenakshi Hospital for several months due to a severe fatty liver condition that impaired his liver functions. When medications failed to improve his condition, a liver transplant became the only life-saving option. With no suitable donor available from his family, the patient was enlisted in the government organ registry. Fortunately, the liver from a brain-dead road traffic accident victim at Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital matched his profile, and the harvested organ was transported in time for the transplant at Meenakshi Hospital.
The procedure was event-less, the patient experienced quick recovery and is doing well.
In his comments, Dr. Prasanna said, “With this successful transplant, the patient has received a new lease on life. More significantly, as this marks the first-ever liver transplant in the delta region, local patients now have a new hope with a competent and dedicated organ transplant center available in their area. We are pleased that our collaboration with Gleneagles Hospitals is bringing advanced transplantation expertise to Thanjavur, a tier-II city. Specialists from Gleneagles regularly visit our hospital to provide expert consultations with our Liver Clinics. At this moment, I would like to express my gratitude to our Doctors team of various specialties, the paramedical team and the support staff, including lab technicians, for their dedication and contributions in helping the hospital achieve this historic milestone.”
In his comments, Dr. Joy Varghese said that performing a liver transplant surgery demands not only expertise in transplantation but also a sophisticated and comprehensive medical infrastructure, along with a dedicated medical and support team. “We are proud to have such a facility and team at Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur. The people of the delta region no longer need to travel to larger cities for advanced procedures like transplantation. With this successful liver transplant, we have shown that it is entirely possible to perform such complex surgeries in a tier-II city without compromising on quality and safety. Patients and their families can avoid the inconveniences, discomfort, and expenses of traveling to a big city for treatment.”
