Kidney Transplant

THE MOST MEANINGFUL WAY TO SPEND LIFE IS TO GIVE LIFE

The transplantation of an organ from one body to another is known as organ transplant. The person who gives the organ is called the donor, while the person who receives is called the recipient. Organ transplant is done to replace the function of the failed organ so that the recipient can live normally. Organs that can be transplanted are the kidney, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestine and thymus. Tissues include bones, tendons (both referred as musculoskeletal grafts), corneas, skin, heart valves and veins. Worldwide, kidney transplant is the most common organ transplantation, followed closely by the liver and then the heart. The cornea and musculoskeletal grafts are the most commonly transplanted tissues.

Kidney Transplant

Live organ transplantation

In a live transplant the donor is alive and donates a renewable tissue, cell, fluid (e.g blood, skin) or a complete organ or part of an organ, in which the remaining part can regenerate or the partial part can take on the workload of the rest of the organ (primarily single organ donation like one kidney, partial donation of liver, small bowel, etc.). Meenakshi Hospital, Tanjore is an approved center for live organ transplants.

Cadaver transplantation

Cadaveric transplant is done when the donor has been declared brain-dead and whose organs are kept viable by ventilators or other mechanisms until they can be excised for transplantation. Meenakshi Hospital, Tanjore is an approved center for cadaver transplantation.
