Meenakshi Hospital Regional Blood Bank offers 24 hour Blood Bank services capable of providing blood components for therapy. Our policies and procedures are based on international standards. We are licensed by the State Drug Controller and approved by Drug Controller of India.

RBTC (Regional Blood Transfusion Center) Status:

  • Meenakshi Hospital Blood Bank is designated as regional blood transfusion center by the Drugs Controller of Tamilnadu and Drugs Controller General of India and we are eligible to participate in blood donation camp organized by various organizations ,colleges, etc..

Quality Assurance :

  • Quality assurance is by following principles of total quality management. One of the elements being active participation in the external quality program. Such a program offers valuable benefits to patient care, their safety, and an overall quality of Blood Bank practices.
  • We are Participant of External Quality Assurance Scheme (EQAS) & Blood Bank External Quality Assurance Scheme (BEQAS).
  • Since 2014 we have obtained Full Score which emphasizes the Quality of our Blood Bank.

Scope of Service:

Blood and Components Available at our Blood Bank are;

  • Whole human blood
  • Packed Red cells
  • Fresh Frozen plasma
  • Platelet Rich Concentrate

Components preparation:

  • Meenakshi Hospital Blood Bank has an exclusive area of 500 sq ft to make all blood components as per the Drugs & cosmetics act of state and central Drugs Controller General of India.
  • The ROTANTA 460 R (Cooling Centrifuge) enables efficient centrifugation for high sample volumes and ideal for preparing various blood components.

Components storage:

  • We have facility for storing various blood components at the specified temperature.
  • Whole human blood IP – Stored at 4°C +/- 2°C for 35 days.
  • Packed Red cells – Stored at 4°C +/- 2°C for 42 days.
  • Fresh Frozen plasma – Stored at -80°C for one year.
  • Platelet Rich Concentrate – Stored at 22°C for 5days from the day of collection with agitation.

Screening Tests Done on the Collected Units:

  • HbsAg . Hepatitis B virus that causes jaundice.
  • HCV - Hepatitis C virus that causes jaundice.
  • HIV I&II - That causes AIDS.
  • VDRL - Syphilis the Venereal disease.
  • MP - That causes malarial fever.
  • With the consent of the donor the above tests are being done and the donor is having every right to know his test reports and to collect his test report and certificate.
  • The charges done for the blood is only for the screening on Transfusion Transmissible Infections (TTI), which reduces the risk of communicable diseases through Blood Transfusion.

Apheresis:

  • Apheresis is a medical procedure that involves removing whole blood from a donor or patient and separating the blood into individual components so that one particular component can be removed. The remaining blood components then are re-introduced back into the bloodstream of the patient or donor.
